How to Add or Remove Dollar Sign in Google Sheets

In Google Sheets, you can add formatting to your cells so that your numbers will have a dollar sign ($) to represent a currency.

Whether you want it to show the dollar symbol to represent USD, or you want a different currency symbol, all of these options are possible in your spreadsheet.

There may be times where you want to add the dollar sign to your numbers so that they represent monetary values, but other times you may want to remove this from your sheet.

How to Add Dollar Sign

Format as Currency

The easiest way to add a dollar sign to your cells in Google sheets is to use the Format as currency tool in the top menu.

To do this:

  1. Highlight the cells that you want to add the dollar sign to ($)
  2. In the toolbar, click on the Format as currency (dollar sign) tool
  3. Your numbers will now have a dollar symbol added to them.

You can also format your cells as currency by selecting Format in the top menu and then selecting Number and clicking on Currency. The end result of this method will be the same, your cells will be in currency format with the dollar sign at the beginning of the number.

Accounting Format

Another option for adding the dollar sign to your spreadsheet is by using accounting format.

This is done through the Format option in the top menu.

Here’s how it’s done:

  1. Highlight the cells that you want to change to Accounting format
  2. In the top menu select Format
  3. Then in the drop-down menu select Number
  4. From here select Accounting

This will now change your cells to accounting format where the dollar symbol as at the very left of the cell

How to Remove Dollar Sign

Removing the dollar sign from your cells in Google Sheets is similar to the way you add it. The best way to do it is to change the formatting to something that does not have the dollar symbol.

Here’s how to remove the dollar sign by changing to number format

  1. Highlight the cells that you want to remove the dollar sign for
  2. In the top menu select Format
  3. Then in the drop-down menu select Number
  4. From here select Number again

If the dollar sign is not there because of formatting, you can try a find and replace  to replace “$” with nothing to get rid of the dollar sign. This will work if these symbols have been manually typed in and are not there because of formatting.
